Hardy Rubber Tree (Eucommia ulmoides) Starter

Hardy Rubber Tree is a rare, cold-hardy deciduous species with elm-like leaves, gray fissured bark, and a tough, resilient nature. Best known for the latex threads that stretch when a leaf is torn, it’s one of the only rubber-producing trees that can survive in temperate climates. Though not widely used in bonsai, it offers interesting potential for those looking to experiment with unusual material.

As a Bonsai:

Eucommia ulmoides is a challenging but intriguing choice for bonsai. It responds well to pruning and develops a strong trunk and broad branch structure over time. Leaf size is moderate, so it’s better suited for larger bonsai or naturalistic styles. The bark begins to show texture with age, and its overall structure lends itself to upright forms.

📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
