Nandina 'Gulf Stream'
Gulf Stream Nandina (Nandina domestica 'Gulf Stream')
‘Gulf Stream’ is a dwarf cultivar of Heavenly Bamboo, selected for its compact growth, fine foliage, and brilliant seasonal color shifts—ranging from lime green to bronze to fiery red. Unlike standard Nandina, which can grow leggy and unruly, ‘Gulf Stream’ stays dense and manageable, making it a far more suitable candidate for bonsai or container training.
As a Bonsai:
While not widely used in traditional bonsai, Gulf Stream Nandina is a great choice for experimental or naturalistic bonsai styles. The fine, feathery foliage and bold color make for striking visual interest year-round. Its small compound leaves and naturally compact form help it stand out from the species. Best suited for medium to large bonsai, or even as a striking seasonal accent tree.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
