Cedar Elm Bonsai - One of a Kind (02)
Cedar Elm (Ulmus crassifolia) – One of a Kind Bonsai
Exposed root style in a glazed bonsai pot. This tree carries one of the most striking root-and-trunk combinations in the batch: a knuckled base that twists upward into a bold curve before branching out, with exposed roots that flare like fingers gripping the soil surface. It’s got that perfect balance of rugged and refined—already interesting to look at from every angle, but still with plenty of room to push further.Cedar Elm is a powerhouse native species for bonsai. Its naturally small serrated leaves, rough bark, and vigorous growth make it one of the most rewarding North American trees to develop. Tough as nails and easy to work, it responds quickly to training while showing character early on.
Cold hardy to Zone 6. Requires a true winter dormancy—keep outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground with mulch around the pot and wind protection.
Vigorous grower, tolerates hard pruning and wiring well.
Full sun preferred. Water deeply and consistently during the growing season.
Fertilize moderately for steady, compact growth.
