Yew
Yew (Taxus sp.)Starter
This yew was grown from cuttings collected on the farm, likely a Taxus x media 'Hicksii', but exact cultivar is unconfirmed. Regardless, it shares the core features that make yews valuable in bonsai—tight needle growth, strong backbudding, and the ability to handle heavy pruning and styling over time.
As a Bonsai:
Yews are underrated but highly capable bonsai subjects, especially for those looking to create bold, ancient-looking conifers. They tolerate deep cuts, backbud reliably on old wood, and can develop great deadwood features. Their slow to moderate growth makes them easy to control in refinement, and their evergreen needles stay clean and neat with proper care.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
Plant Features:
Hardiness Zone: Estimated 4–7 (cold-hardy and requires winter dormancy)
Growth Habit: Dense, upright, and slow to moderate in vigor
Mature Size: 8–12 ft as a shrub; well-suited to small, medium, or large bonsai
Foliage: Dark green, flat needles; tight and easily refined
Bark: Reddish-brown and flaky, develops character with age
Sun Requirements: Full sun to part shade (more sun = tighter growth)
Soil Type: Well-draining, loamy soil
Water Needs: Moderate; prefers consistent moisture but not soggy conditions
Special Features: Backbuds on old wood, takes well to carving, long bonsai lifespan potential
About Our Starters & Stock
As part of their training for future bonsai, our starters and stock trees are periodically pruned or trunk-chopped to encourage strong structure and desirable growth. If you’re purchasing for landscape use and prefer trees that have not been recently pruned or chopped, feel free to contact us before ordering to check the current status of the species you’re interested in!
