The Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is a beautiful conifer that thrives in full sun and is hardy in zones 2-9. It is native to North America and can grow up to 50 feet tall in the wild. While great for wind- and privacy screens on larger properties, it's also an excellent choice for native bonsai as it readily back-buds, and can be kept small and compact. While its growth habit can make it challening, its evergreen foliage, attractive bark, and long-lived dead-wood make it a great choice for bonsai enthusiasts looking for a unique challenge.
