Japanese Larch
Japanese Larch (Larix kaempferi) Starter
Japanese Larch is a deciduous conifer prized in bonsai for its soft, blue-green needles, rugged bark, and natural taper. Unique among conifers, it drops its needles each winter, revealing an elegant branching structure and helping build character year after year. This starter gives you a strong base to begin shaping one of the more expressive and dynamic cold-climate bonsai species.
As a Bonsai:
Larix kaempferi develops excellent movement and natural taper, and tolerates both wiring and hard pruning. Its fast growth and ability to backbud on old wood make it suitable for a wide range of styles—from formal upright to literati. It’s a favorite among cold-climate growers for its seasonal transitions and ability to handle significant shaping.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
