Japanese Red Cedar Starter
Japanese Red Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) Starter
Japanese Red Cedar is a fast-growing, evergreen conifer with fine, awl-like foliage, strong vertical growth, and a fibrous reddish bark that develops texture with age. Though commonly used in Japanese temple plantings and gardens, it also holds strong potential for bonsai—especially for those who enjoy conifer styles with soft foliage texture and natural movement.
As a Bonsai:
Cryptomeria is not as commonly used in Western bonsai collections, but it's well-known in Japan and gaining attention for its soft foliage, fast growth, and dramatic trunk potential. The foliage doesn’t reduce as tightly as some pines or junipers, so it’s best suited for medium to large bonsai styles. Responds well to wiring when young, and trunk texture improves noticeably with age.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
