Shantung Maple (Acer buergerianum) is a lovely maple species native to Northern China. While not as common in bonsai as the Japanese and Trident Maples, they are a noteworthy choice for bonsai with their five-lobed leaves that turn vibrant shades of red, orange, and yellow in the fall. Shantung maples are significantly more cold-hardy and tough than Trident and Japanese Maples, surving in the grown down to zone 4. however their leaves are larger which make them more suitable for larger bonsai. Like all maples, Shantung Maples are an outdoor species requiring winter dormancy. Although they likely can withstand limited protection in zone 6, we still recomend winter protection in zones 6 or below.

These pre-bonsai are 3-5 years old, grown in the 3 gallon nursery pot, and pruned throughout the year to promote lower, more interesting branching structure. These large pre-bonsai are ideal for those wanting a head start at creating their bonsai masterpiece.
