Are you interested in Bonsai but not sure where to start? No Problem! Our beginner workshops are designed for all ages and skill levels! Whether you’ve got a black thumb or a green thumb, come learn the basics of bonsai history, development, and care, then style your first bonsai!

What to expect

   1. Brief introduction to the art of bonsai, tree basics, and bonsai care (~20-30 minutes).

   2. Demonstration of bonsai pruning and styling (~20 minutes).

   3. Venture into the nursery and greenhouse to pick out your tree!

   4. Start sculpting your masterpiece with our help!

   5. Add some finishing touches, then take your new bonsai home!

While we accept walk-ins, we limit our workshops to 20 attendees, so get your tickets in advance!

Please do not show up 1+ hours early without a book to read or thumbs to twiddle. 

Ticket information:

Tickets include the educational rambling by yours truly (Hi, I'm Eliot), bonsai pruning/styling demo, training wire, and of course, your bonsai tree! The tree included is a standard size, great for beginners, but you can always upgrade your tree at the workshop! Basic tools and gloves are provided, but feel to bring your own!

Tree Species

The tree species we have available varies based on the season and availability. For workshops at BlackRoot Farms, expect plenty of options for both indoors and outdoors. For Off-site workshops, we bring 2-3 options to pick from for each ticket size. Feel free to reach out in advance about which trees will be available at the next workshop!

Severe Weather

We may cancel in the case of severe storms, heavy rain/snow, or unsafe road conditions. In such cases we will contact you to reschedule the event or to apply your ticket fees to nursery credit (which applies to any products, future workshops, or services). We do not offer refunds for weather-related cancelations. If conditions outside are reasonable but uncomfortable (heavy rain/snow, extreme cold/heat/wind) we'll hold the workshops in a climate-controlled space, but please come prepared to brave the great outdoors while exploring the nursery and selecting a tree. We generally won’t cancel for light rain or snow provided the roads are safe.
