Species Description
American elm is a classic native tree with an iconic vase-shaped growth habit and strong branching that adapts surprisingly well to bonsai. All our American elms comes are seedlings from a mature mother tree 30+ year old tree on the nursery, notable for its reliable bright yellow fall color and no signs of Dutch elm disease, so it may have some natural resistance. With training, it develops fine ramification and a graceful yet rugged character that captures the spirit of an old elm on the landscape. Native American Elms are becoming increasingly rare in nurseries, but we're keeping the species growing as bonsai!

Care Notes

  • Grows best in full sun, which encourages tighter internodes and smaller leaves

  • Moderate water needs, preferring evenly moist soil during the growing season

  • Responds well to pruning, with strong back-budding that supports ramification

  • Known for reliable yellow fall color and resilience, making it a rewarding North American species for bonsai

📢 Cold-hardy to zone 3. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.
