Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) is one of the most iconic species for bonsai in North America. A fast-growing deciduous conifer, it develops fluted trunks, wide buttressing roots, and fine branching with proper care. It backbuds extremely well, tolerates heavy pruning, and thrives in wet conditions—making it versatile for both formal upright and swamp-style plantings. The nebari training from the disc gives this material a jump-start toward long-term refinement.

These Bald Cypress have been wired while young to create an interesting curved trunk, a great start to a unique Bald Cypress bonsai!

Care Notes

  • Prefers full sun for strong growth and compact foliage

  • High water needs, especially during the growing season, and can thrive even in standing water

  • Responds very well to hard pruning and trunk chops, quickly pushing new shoots for training

  • Known for its rapid development, making it one of the faster species to train into impressive bonsai

📢 Cold-hardy to zone 5. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.
