Staked Blue Rug Juniper
Staked Blue Rug Juniper (Juniperus horizontalis ‘Blue Rug’) – Upright Trained
Typically known as a low-growing, ground-covering juniper, these Blue Rug Junipers have been staked and trained to grow upright to about 3 feet, giving them a whole new dimension. This vertical form opens the door to unique bonsai styling or use as small garden specimen trees with cascading or windswept potential.
As a Bonsai:
While Blue Rug isn't a traditional bonsai variety, this staked form allows for creative trunk lines and eventual cascading or semi-cascade designs. The foliage is soft blue-gray, and the plant is highly drought-tolerant and cold-hardy. With time, the trunk lignifies and develops natural taper, making it a compelling option for growers who want something different.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
