Natal plum (Carissa macrocarpa) is a tropical to subtropical evergreen shrub valued for its small, glossy leaves, dense growth, and naturally compact branching. It responds readily to pruning and can develop fine ramification, while older trunks develop attractive gray bark and a convincing sense of age. Fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers can be followed by red, plum-like fruit, adding both flowering and fruiting interest to developed plants. Its compact foliage, strong growth, and ability to build dense structure make Natal plum particularly well suited to bonsai development.

Care Notes

  • Light: Full sun to part sun
  • Water: Moderate; water thoroughly and allow the surface of the soil to begin drying between waterings
  • Fertilizer: Moderate during active growth
  • Bonsai Development: Responds well to pruning and develops dense branching; young shoots can be wired, but older branches become stiff and the sharp thorns require some care when styling

📢 This is a tropical species—it thrives outdoors during the warm months but should be brought indoors when night temperatures fall below ~50°F. For best growth, keep it outside in full sun during spring through early fall.
