Chinese Elm
Chinese Elm (Ulmus parvifolia) Starter
Chinese Elm is one of the most widely used and beginner-friendly species in bonsai, known for its small serrated leaves, fine twigging, and adaptability to a wide range of styles and techniques. This starter offers a flexible foundation for anyone from first-time growers to experienced stylists.
As a Bonsai:
Ulmus parvifolia is highly responsive to pruning, tolerates wiring well, and can be defoliated to encourage finer ramification. It develops dense branching, smooth gray bark, and eventually patchy, mottled bark that adds age and character. Suitable for formal upright, informal upright, broom, and even root-over-rock styles.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.

About Our Starters & Stock
