Chinese Kousa Dogwood
Kousa Dogwood (Cornus kousa var. chinensis) Starter
Kousa Dogwood var. chinensis is a deciduous flowering tree known for its creamy white star-shaped blooms, mottled bark, and layered, horizontal branching. The Chinese variety is more vigorous and heavier flowering than the straight species, making it an eye-catching candidate for naturalistic bonsai or flowering tree projects.
As a Bonsai:
While Kousa Dogwood has not traditionally been used in bonsai, it is gaining popularity among growers for its stunning bark, strong branch structure, and seasonal interest. Leaf size limits its use in very small designs, but it performs well in medium to large bonsai styles, especially when grown for trunk character and tiered branching. With time, it develops a refined structure and offers both spring flowers and striking fall color.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
