Chinese Quince (Pseudocydonia sinensis)
Chinese quince is a highly prized bonsai species known for its smooth bark that exfoliates into mottled patches of creams, greens, and pinks. It grows with strong vigor, produces large but beautifully shaped leaves, and develops excellent taper and trunk character with age. Though leaf size can be a challenge, consistent pruning and refinement bring out its elegant branching and striking bark, making it a standout deciduous bonsai.
Care Notes
Cold-hardy to Zone 5; requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round
Prefers full sun for strong growth, better leaf reduction, and healthy branching
Moderate water needs, with evenly moist but well-drained soil during the growing season
Responds well to pruning, and regular cutback helps control leaf size and build fine branching
Known for its exfoliating bark and strong trunk development, which become major focal points as the tree matures
Chinese Flowering Quince
As part of their training for future bonsai, our starters and stock trees are periodically pruned or trunk-chopped to encourage strong structure and desirable growth. If you’re purchasing for landscape use and prefer trees that have not been recently pruned or chopped, feel free to contact us before ordering to check the current status of the species you’re interested in!
