Japanese Cryptomeria ‘Tansu’ (Cryptomeria japonica ‘Tansu’) Bonsai
A compact cryptomeria bonsai with a dense, finely textured canopy and a naturally tidy silhouette. These trees are developed with an emphasis on short internodes and compact branching, creating a strong foundation for refined pad structure at a small scale. Trunk lines with early movement that support a balanced, miniature form. Photos are representative of size and stage of development; individual trees will vary slightly in trunk movement, branching, and pot style.
Species / Cultivar Description
‘Tansu’ is a super-dwarf cultivar of Cryptomeria japonica prized for its extremely compact growth habit and fine, needle-like foliage. Compared to standard cryptomeria, it grows more slowly and with much tighter structure, making it particularly well suited to small bonsai and long-term refinement. The foliage holds density well with regular pruning, and the cultivar responds reliably to wiring and directional growth control. Over time, it can develop attractive bark character while maintaining a consistently miniature scale. Hardy in the ground to Zone 6.
