Species / Cultivar Description
Dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) is a fast-growing deciduous conifer known for its fine, feathery foliage and strong apical growth. It develops taper quickly and responds well to repeated pruning, allowing rapid trunk development and structural refinement. This species backbuds readily along the trunk and branches, making it forgiving and well suited to aggressive development techniques. Its vigorous growth and predictable response make it particularly useful for growers looking to build size and structure quickly.
Care Notes
- Light: Full sun to part sun
- Water: High; prefers consistently moist soil and tolerates very wet conditions
- Fertilizer: High during active growth
- Bonsai Development: Extremely vigorous and backbuds readily; responds well to hard pruning and rapid development techniques
- In-ground hardiness: Zone 4–8
- Winter Care: Cold-hardy and requires winter dormancy; keep outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the container, and protect from wind
CD planted means that they were originally grown through a physical CD/disc to encourage lateral roots in time, resulting in a much higher quality nebari! See photo for example of nebari under the soil.
