Green Japanese Maple Pre-bonsai
Green Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) Starter – Pre-Trained
These are standard green Japanese maples, but with a head start. Each has been selected and trained with gentle trunk curves and strong low branching, giving you a well-structured foundation to build from. Planted in training pots, they’re ideal for growers who want a classic Acer palmatum with a bit of shape already in place.
As a Bonsai:
Japanese maples are a bonsai staple, known for their refined branching, vibrant fall color, and smooth bark. These starters have been gently shaped to set up natural movement in the trunk and provide multiple options for future design. With regular pruning and seasonal care, they’re well-suited for formal upright, informal upright, or broom styles.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
Plant Features:
Hardiness Zone: 5–8 (cold-hardy and requires winter dormancy)
Growth Habit: Upright, branching structure with strong taper potential
Mature Size: 15–25 ft in landscapes; much smaller in bonsai form

Trunk & Bark: Smooth green bark; develops character with age
Sun Requirements: Full sun to partial shade (afternoon shade in hot climates)
Soil Type: Moist, well-draining, slightly acidic soil

Special Features: Pre-trained trunk movement, solid structure for further refinement, classic bonsai species
About Our Starters & Stock
As part of their training for future bonsai, our starters and stock trees are periodically pruned or trunk-chopped to encourage strong structure and desirable growth. If you’re purchasing for landscape use and prefer trees that have not been recently pruned or chopped, feel free to contact us before ordering to check the current status of the species you’re interested in!
