Japanese Tree-Lilac
Japanese Tree Lilac (Syringa reticulata) Starter – Shaped for Low Branching
This Japanese Tree Lilac starter has been intentionally shaped to encourage low branching, giving you a strong head start for bonsai or garden training. While not a traditional bonsai species, it features attractive exfoliating bark, large fragrant flower clusters, and a rounded, upright form that can be trained into bold, naturalistic shapes.
As a Bonsai:
Not commonly used in bonsai, but an interesting challenge for ambitious growers. The large leaves and coarse growth habit make it better suited for larger bonsai styles or creative container-grown specimens. That said, its branching structure and bark character can become visually compelling with age and proper shaping.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.

About Our Starters & Stock
As part of their training for future bonsai, our starters and stock trees are periodically pruned or trunk-chopped to encourage strong structure and desirable growth. If you’re purchasing for landscape use and prefer trees that have not been recently pruned or chopped, feel free to contact us before ordering to check the current status of the species you’re interested in!
