Japanese White Birch (Betula platyphylla japonica)

This species is known for its clean white bark, which becomes more prominent with age and sun exposure. Leaves are relatively small for a birch, making it a decent candidate for larger bonsai or naturalistic styles. Fast-growing, cold-hardy, and responsive to pruning. Can be a rewarding but challenging project for growers who enjoy working with vigorous species.

These are seed grown pre-bonsai, trunk curvature & character established while young while leaving plenty of branches to work with and develop further.

📢 Cold-hardy to zone 3. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.

Care tips:

  • Full sun encourages strong growth and bark color

  • Water regularly—doesn’t tolerate prolonged drought

  • Deciduous—drops leaves in fall, requires a winter rest
