Korean hornbeam (Carpinus coreana) is a deciduous hornbeam particularly well suited to bonsai due to its naturally small leaves, compact growth, and ability to develop exceptionally fine twigging and ramification. Its strongly veined foliage provides excellent texture during the growing season, while the dense branching creates an attractive winter silhouette after leaf drop. With age, the smooth gray bark, trunk, and surface roots develop increasing character. Its naturally fine proportions and strong response to pruning make Korean hornbeam one of the most desirable hornbeams for developing refined bonsai.

Water: Moderate to high; prefers evenly moist soil and should not be allowed to dry excessively during active growth
Fertilizer: Moderate during active growth
Bonsai Development: Responds very well to pruning and develops exceptionally fine ramification; young branches wire readily, while older branches become increasingly stiff
 
📢 Cold-hardy to zone 5. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.
