Southern Live Oak (Quercus virginiana)
Southern live oak is a tough, iconic North American species known for its dense wood, muscular branching, and the ability to develop powerful trunks with age. As bonsai, it brings a bold, ancient character, with small evergreen leaves that reduce surprisingly well in containers. With consistent pruning, it forms a tight canopy and strong structure, making it an excellent choice for growers who want a rugged, long-lived oak with year-round foliage.

Care Notes

  • Cold-hardy to Zone 8; not fully deciduous and should be protected from prolonged freezes

  • Prefers full sun for compact growth and better leaf reduction

  • Moderate water needs, best with regular moisture but well-drained soil

  • Responds well to pruning, back-budding reliably to help build ramification

  • Known for its strong branching and year-round foliage, giving it the presence of an old oak even at a young age
