River Birch is a hardy North American native known for its distinctive peeling bark and strong, fast growth. Unlike common species often used in bonsai, River Birch brings something different to the bench—a rugged, native character with excellent vigor. With time and refinement, it can become a striking bonsai that highlights both its bold bark and fine branching. Our River Birch are grown from cuttings taken from a tree with particularly flaky bark, retaining the exfoliating bark while also giving them a great start to a nebari. 
 
Care Notes:
Prefers full sun, but can tolerate part shade.
Water frequently—River Birch are thirsty trees that dislike drying out.
Responds well to pruning and wiring, with fast recovery and vigorous back-budding.
 
📢 Cold-hardy to zone 3. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.
