Rock elm (Ulmus thomasii) is an exceptionally uncommon North American native elm that is rarely encountered in either the nursery trade or the bonsai world, making it an unusual opportunity for growers interested in underutilized native species. It features naturally small leaves, rugged growth, and exceptionally hard, dense wood. As it matures, the trunk develops deeply furrowed, corky bark that can give even relatively compact trees considerable age and character. Like other elms, rock elm responds strongly to pruning and readily produces new growth from older wood, allowing dense branching and fine ramification to be developed over time. Its scarcity, compact foliage, excellent bark, and strong developmental characteristics make it a particularly intriguing species for bonsai. Our Rock Elms are grown from cuttings taken from a tree collected at BlackRoot that had particularly corky bark, ensuring each rock elm you receive will have the same traits (see photo).

Water: Moderate; prefers evenly moist soil but should not remain constantly waterlogged

Bonsai Development: Responds well to hard pruning and backbuds readily; repeated pruning encourages dense ramification and reduced leaf size
 
📢 Cold-hardy to zone 3. Requires winter dormancy and should be kept outdoors year-round. In colder climates, place on the ground, mulch around the pot, and protect from wind.
