Sweet Gum

Sweet Gum

Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) Starter

Sweetgum is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the southeastern U.S., known for its distinctive star-shaped leaves, brilliant fall color, and ridged bark that becomes deeply textured with age. While it's not a common bonsai species, it offers exciting potential for those looking to work with native material that brings strong seasonal interest.

As a Bonsai:

Sweetgum can be a challenging but rewarding bonsai subject. Its large leaves don’t reduce easily, so it’s best suited for medium to large bonsai styles. However, it backbuds well, tolerates aggressive pruning, and develops natural taper and elegant branch structure with proper care. Fall color can range from yellow to deep red and purple, making it a showstopper in autumn.

📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.

  • About Our Starters & Stock

As part of their training for future bonsai, our starters and stock trees are periodically pruned or trunk-chopped to encourage strong structure and desirable growth.
